tips to become rj, how to make rj, salary skills, types, ways to make Radio jockey

If you have been wondering how to become a good radio jockey, you’ve come to the right place. The beauty of the profession is that it’s not just about being good at what you do; it’s about becoming good at it and then knowing how to keep doing it, day in and day out. You can never quit your job, even when you want to.

Here are some tips to help you along the way. Keep in mind, though, that the best tips come from the veterans in the field. I read dozens of online articles and blogs and I’ve spoken with countless radio professionals over the years about how to become a good radio jockey and each one of them shared their tips with me. I have a few tips for those who want to get started as a radio DJ.

First of all, the radio industry is extremely competitive. All of the big names in the business have some sort of “celebrity” status. They might be stars, or the target audience for a band or group, or they might be supermodels or Hollywood actors, politicians, or, in some cases, people who have been inducted into some prestigious category of “rock stars.” There are few other jobs where you can become so much more than just another member of the crowd.

There are other qualifications that make you a more desirable choice for a radio jockey than someone who is an intern. They’ve always held positions, whether in management or production or on the staff, who were as respected as the person who wants to become a radio jockey. And the veteran jockeys tend to have more experience on their side and have more “street cred” and networking contacts than an intern.

TIP #1: Learn the Etiquette

First, they should sign up for a training program before they start working. It doesn’t matter if you decide to go with a live classroom, on-line training or a combination of both. The important thing is that you learn the basic etiquette of the business and know how to get things done. There is a lot to learn, especially in the initial stages of your career.

TIP #2: Expand Your Experience

You should try to find a few areas of expertise that will lead to extra money and clients. Look at some of the jobs that are available online in the radio and entertainment industry, or look into ways you can expand your experience. Always keep in touch with the upcoming trends of radio industry and mould yourself in the way people wants you to.

TIP # 3: Learning From Seniors

My third tip is that you should seek the advice of others. Ask anyone who has been in the business for any length of time, from radio history buffs to current staff members. Find out how they keep things running smoothly and how they create great programming. With the right amount of knowledge and guidance, the rest is just a matter of doing it.

TIP # 4: Create Networking

You should always take the initiative to help others. Many people think that what makes them stand out from the crowd is their individual talent. They do not realize the importance of networking. Networking will get you noticed and it will make you seem like a better candidate for new clients. You should feel free to send out information about yourself and your skills.

TIP # 5: Polish Your Skills

The most important tip to become an RJ is that you should always be courteous to all of your listeners. You will come across as mean and grumpy or boorish if you don’t take your turn at the microphone. In fact, just the act of taking a call can take the shine off someone’s voice and put you behind someone who’s a winner.

TIP # 6: Be Observant & Social

Another way to be a better radio jockey is to attend conventions, rallies, exhibitions and all other places where radio personalities gather. You can gain contacts and become more aware of the world of radio and entertainment and you can learn a lot about how to become a good radio jockey.

TIP # 7: Market Yourself

You must know how to market yourself. There are so many talented and hardworking individuals out there are so many groups out there that need a great radio DJ. That is, of course, assuming that there is a market for a quality radio DJ. For some niche markets, a local DJ might be sufficient, but if there is a huge need, you may want to look into obtaining professional credentials and a radio broadcast license

TIP # 8: Be A Good Reader And Writer

Fourth thing, you need to do Start reading genuine blogs, magazines and other publications to get credible information. Do not rely on forwarded messages on WhatsApp, Facebook or other such social media apps. Always authenticate the information you get from an outsource before conveying it to your listeners. Be well aware of the social norms and situations of the country and current affairs and keep yourself updated. Practice writing, the more you write the more clarity of thoughts you will gain. In addition, try and practice writing in brief, precise writing, keeping your points short and crisp.

TIP# 9: Be A God Listener

An excellent RJ is always an excellent listener, more you patiently listen to others more you will gain their trust and confidence. Start listening to radio critically, analyse how the RJs speak and what are they speaking about. Moreover, think that how you, as a Radio Jockey, will put forth the content differently. What will you do to make it more interesting?. Keep analyzing yourself and keep searching the interesting and attention-grabbing piece of words to motivate others in listening you.

TIP # 10: Be Yourself

Be yourself by all of the means. Rj Naved , a famous RJ of Indian radio industry once said that you don’t have to pretend something. Your original voice, style and speaking accent is your actual personality and the beutify of your innerself so don’t try to pretend a heavier voice or fake accent in order to gain fame. People will love you as much as you love yourself.

TIP # 11: Love your Job

Practice makes a man perfect is a wonderful quote that faultlessly fits for the job of RJ. Understand the fact that on radio you do not have the luxury of imagery therefore you will need to learn to use your voice effectively. Practice by recording yourself and then hearing it back to know your flaws.

Major Skills Required Becoming a Good Radio Jockey

The major skills that one needs to be a successful RJ will be:

  • Communication skills
  • Ability to use voice effectively
  • Creativity
  • Knowledge
  • Strong personality
  • Team player

RJs quite contrary to perception have a very hectic work life. They spend anywhere eight to ten hours in office and most of their time is not taken up by the actual show but goes in preparation which includes arranging guests, brainstorming, recording OBs, air check sessions and social media interaction and getting productions in place, basically it is a tasking job. After all of this tiring work sessions then must have to come LIVE in a good mood, leaving all the worries and qualms behind, to entertain their audience and present a mood enhancing live show for their amusement. So, this how an RJ’s life is built up, the job which seems to be very interactive, easy and fun, is not actually a piece of cake for everyone.
